Learning about Emacs

I've started learning about Emacs.

Not trying Emacs

Most people who are learning and playing with a new tool in their daily toolkit would say that they are "trying" the new tool. I am not "trying" Emacs out. I can scarcely get through editing one file, let alone the multitude of tasks that I need to accomplish manipulating text and files throughout the day.

Why a new text editor?

Most developers and web geeks I know swear by their editor, or are actively looking to fall in love with a new one. After a 3 year affair with TextMate I started using Vi(M) after starting with at Canonical in August of 2008.

It has been a great experience, and there is a lot that I've yet to learn about vim even after more than a year of daily use. I've even gotten to the point where I nearly prefer using vim to TextMate.

Even so, I'm intrigued by the passion Emacs users use when speaking about their editor of choice. I'm interested in learning another point of view and seeing what I might gain from re-mapping my caps lock key to something a bit more useful. Also, exercise is good for my pinky!
